1965 911 Signal Red

1965 911 Signal Red

This 1965 Porsche 911 is a short-wheelbase coupe that was delivered new to California and was stored from the 1990s until 2017, when it was acquired by the selling dealer. Subsequent refurbishment work involved metal repairs, a repaint, and rebuilds of the replacement 2.0-liter flat-six and five-speed manual transaxle. The car is finished in Signal Red over black leatherette and corduroy upholstery, and equipment includes 15″ steel wheels, chrome bumper guards, pop-out quarter windows, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a Webasto heater, and a Blaupunkt radio. This 911 was previously listed on BaT in August 2022 and is now offered again by the selling dealer with refurbishment photos, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of the Kardex, service records, and a clean California title.

Originally finished in Signal Red, the body was stripped and repainted in 2020 following metal repairs. The seller notes that the front suspension pan and front latch panel were repaired due to a previously-fitted front-mount oil cooler. Details include chrome bumper guards, four-screw horn grilles, a Talbot-style driver’s door mirror, gold script on the rear decklid, and a single polished exhaust outlet.

Lemmerz 15” chrome wheels wear hubcaps with Porsche crests and are wrapped in Michelin XZX radial tires. The car was factory equipped with an independent front suspension including an anti-sway bar, longitudinal torsion bar, upper struts, and lower wishbones. The rear semi-trailing arm setup features a transverse torsion bar. Braking is through four-wheel discs. Koni shocks were installed, the suspension bushings replaced, and suspension components were powder coated during the refurbishment. Work in 2020 involved replacing the control arm bushings tie rod ends, ball joints, brake lines, and brake master cylinder.

The interior features seats that have been reupholstered in black leatherette with corduroy inserts. Replacement carpets were also installed by the selling dealer, and equipment includes a Blaupunkt push-button radio, a loudspeaker, a Webasto heater, folding rear seats, a wooden shift knob, and pop-out quarter windows.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a central 8k-rpm tachometer, a 150-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level, oil level, oil temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 27k miles, approximately 500 of which were added by the selling dealer. Total mileage is unknown. A replacement fuel level sending unit was installed in 2021 and the speedometer cable was replaced in 2023.

The replacement 2.0-liter flat-six was rebuilt during the refurbishment by Black Forest Automotive of San Diego, California, and it is equipped with a later-style oil pump. The Solex carburetors were reportedly rebuilt by 356 Carburetor Rescue. The cylinder head gasket and chain cover gasket were replaced in 2023.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle, which was reportedly overhauled and fitted with replacement synchros and first and second gear dog teeth. A photo of transaxle stamping 101888 is shown in the gallery, and a corresponding number is listed on the CoA.
